Introvert? Bingo!

The other day, a friend shared an image macro making the rounds on Facebook titled, “Introvert Bingo.” It’s your typical Bingo card with different boxes that say things like, “I let that phone call go to voicemail,” and “I read 3+ books last month.” If you’re able to answer enough questions with a yes to fill one row, then you might consider yourself an introvert. If you’re able to cover the entire board, then that’s a blackout, and you are a super introvert. Check, check, check. I filled all boxes except the one “I do all my shopping online.” Not yet, but let me tell you, that is very tempting.

Probably no one wants to think of themselves as introverted. Being an introvert is not a highly-praised trait in our culture. A common misconception, though, is that introverts are quiet and shy. While that may be true for some, it certainly isn’t always the case. Once I’m at the party, I’m fine. I, actually, excel in the witty banter department. (I think.) It’s just that if given the choice of going to the party in the first place or staying home with that book, or those shows tempting me in the DVR, legs sprawled out in front of me like a lox, cocoa pita chips by my side… the night at home is really tempting. (Plus, I don’t have to worry about finding socks without holes in the toes.)

It really shouldn’t come as a complete surprise to me, the notion of my own introversion. For someone who spends as much time as I do in the solitary pursuit of writing, it makes sense. And reading books. And all that Netflixing. Accepting it, though, is a way to realize that maybe sometimes I will have to put myself out there a little more and focus on socializing. I also know that if I really don’t want to go to the party, it’s okay.

It’s not you, it’s me. (Okay, maybe it’s you, but I will be polite and not say so.)
